Editorial: Okita Anri's Retirement

Okita Anri (or Anri Okita as she has promoted herself in the west) has been a mainstay of the JAV scene for the last few years.  In the wake of the loss of icons such as Maria Ozawa and Saori Hara, she has taken up the mantle of hottest and most popular Eurasian star.  And while we can debate the merits of the performances of the three, for my money, Okita Anri is by far the hottest.  For that reason and many others, it came as a big disappointment that she announced her retirement from JAV recently.

I won't speculate too much on the reasons behind this.  There are those cynics (or perhaps optimists, depending on your point of view) that think this "retirement" is simply a ploy to go away for a while, boost demand in her absence, and then drive big sales and personal income with her "return".  Then there are those who are super optimistic in thinking she will finally cross over to uncensored western porn glory.  Given her native English proficiency, and her recent promotion and recognition in the US, that's honestly not as far fetched as it would be for most JAV idols, though I don't think it will happen.  We can hope though, because I think one day a huge JAV star will break through to America, one bigger than Marica Hase was in Japan.  On that day they will probably break the internet.  Here's hoping it's Okita Anri.

Of course, she could take the route into alternative forms of entertainment, as some of the biggest idols have done.  Perhaps she will spend some time in Japan's sex industry, though I doubt that will happen in her case.  Then, there's the possibility she will simply fade into obscurity, perhaps returning to her native England.  Maybe she found some rich, handsome gentleman to marry her. Ok, I guess I lied.  I just spent quite a bit of space speculating on why she's retiring.  At any rate, for the time being, we won't know for sure.  Depending on the path she takes, we might never know why she's retiring.  Still, it's worth taking a few moments to reflect on her career.  Okita Anri is a fairly unique JAV idol to begin with, since she is only half Japanese.  Adding to her allure, she is half English, originally from Birmingham, and spent most of her life in the UK.  Thus, perhaps even rarer among JAV idols, she is a native English speaker.  All of these intangible items are great, but when you add them to her gorgeous face and massive Japanese K-cups, she's a total knockout.  Perhaps, when viewed as a complete package, one of the hottest of all JAV idols.  It will be tough to say goodbye to her, though she's had a nice long run since her 2011 debut.

Her retirement film, MIMK-044, dropped on May 13.  We will have a review of it, but suffice to say it is a fine film and certainly a necessary addition to collectors of her work.  I won't say that Okita Anri was one of my top personal favorites, but she was a very worthy part of my collection, and I was very happy to amass a respectable array of her films.  She will be sorely missed by me and JAV fans the world over.  On a general note, this is a very interesting and transitional period for JAV.  The losses of Okita Anri and Ai Uehara have hit hard.  Plus, the reality is that Julia, Shinoda Ayumi and Hitomi are closer to the end of their careers than to the beginning.  Most JAV idols do not stay in the business for long, but the huge stars do tend to have a good run.  But while I do hold out some hope that Hitomi might do western uncensored as her career winds down, the reality is that most of these stars will not cross over, nor have comebacks.  This is a painful lesson that all JAV fans must accept.

While there are tons of new girls debuting all the time, it takes someone really special to rise to the top of the elite.  I look forward to see who will start dominating and take up the mantle left by those retiring.

Introduction

By some estimates, modern JAV was born at approximately the same time that the Western porn industry began to emerge. So far as I’ve been able to determine, JAV first reached the West at about the same time as Japanese anime and in the same way, via VHS tapes brought overseas, then copied and distributed via the networking of the 80s nerds. Uncomprehending yet fascinated, JAV was a curiosity item that, unlike anime, did not become a status item of 1990s hardcore nerd cred. However, just like its compatriot, it did benefit from the rise of the internet and the explosion of download speeds, as superstars like Maria Ozawa, Yuma Asami, and Sora Aoi first entered the awareness of a crowd that had become interested in Japanese culture and then grown to desire more.

In order to provide a larger view into JAV, I decided to make my first review one of the older movies that came to the West in that initial wave and certainly got me into the whole thing.

The Actress

Debuting in 2005 when she was barely eighteen years old, Yuma Asami took the JAV industry by storm, and by 2006 was the Number 1 actress. That isn’t an exaggeration; in 2006 and 2007, she was at the top of the industry in terms of sales and rentals, a feat that to the best of my knowledge hasn’t been repeated in recent memory.

Now, what is it about her? Yumachin, as her fans in Japan call her, rose to stunning heights and she is my all-time favorite JAV actress, a status not bestowed lightly. Physically, her attractiveness is indisputable. Her breasts are large and shapely (rejoice, readers, that bosom was made by God and has not been mutilated by human hands). Her waist is tiny; her butt is round and well-defined. Unlike her contemporary Maria Ozawa and modern superstars such as Anri Okita and Julia, Yuma Asami is 100% Japanese, her wide, large eyes set in a heart-shaped and lovely face.

Her physical assets and sexual abilities pale in comparison to her charisma. Through a combination of her genuine personality and her performer’s instinct, Yumachin’s charm overwhelms even the most jaded viewers. Even if she simply laid back and thought of Japan (spoilers: she doesn’t), you’re perfectly ok with it.

The Performance

I referred to this before, but Yuma Asami’s instinct for performance is top class. She’s able to take her role, whichever it happens to be, and play it to fulfill both the natural expectations as well as the perverted fantasies lurking inside the mind. DV-731 is a collection of six vignettes, delivering a variety of sexual content right where her audience wants it to hit. Her acting ability makes it easy to believe she’s anything from a strict, exacting teacher to a cheeky, barely legal cheerleader in the span of ten minutes. Again, not an exaggeration: the film opens with a greeting from her in full cheerleader memorabilia, comporting herself exactly the way an 18 year old cheerleader would act, then transitions to the first scene, as Asami-sensei, sternly teaching (and enunciating) English with only a mild accent, strides through her classroom with absolute authority and complete confidence.

As for her sexual skills, those can be summarized with the same words: absolute authority and complete confidence. Even when she, apparently, surrenders the initiative, she’s still in charge. The sex looks and feels perfectly natural, something your ears will appreciate.

Story/Theme/Setting

There are six scenes, each one with Yumachin in a different role: teacher, office lady, tease, girlfriend, “health” provider, cheerleader. As expected, each scene delivers differently. The first encounter with Yuma Asami is completely non-sexual: cheerleader Yumachin greets the audience, she cheerfully inquires as to how the viewer feels, verbally anticipates the cynical thoughts most viewers would have, and then reassures them that everything will be ok, which becomes a quick transition through the personas we’ll be seeing throughout, with cheerfulness and seduction underpinning each encouragement to “do your best.”

What follows is a different aura that fits each role. As a teacher, Asami-sensei is strict yet sensual, aware of her own sexual charm and sympathetic enough to her hapless “students” to give them a hand. As an office lady, she’s hardworking and empathetic enough to help her “boss” out with his stress. The scene as a tease is where she playfully toys with the POV male, while as a girlfriend, she’s perfectly content to make fun of her POV boyfriend for looking at a porn magazine at a love hotel, when all the love he really needs is freshly showered and ready for a go. As a health provider, she’s quite devoted to making the POV customer squeaky clean and as a cheerleader, she’s high-spirited in her morale efforts.

If anything, cheerful seduction is the chief theme of the film. In each role, Yuma Asami is energetic and making quite clear that whatever gloom or listlessness the viewer may have (via the actor avatar) will be screwed out by her.

Sexual Content

The sexual content varies with the role Yuma Asami is playing. One thing should be made clear now and is reinforced at different times in the film: Yuma Asami is in control and does not need any of the “wank on her face” to get her colleagues to orgasm. With hand, mouth, and the kingdom of Venus between her legs, it’s nothing more than a directorial convenience that even makes that necessary.

As a teacher, Asami-sensei does a dual handjob/blowjob with her students, with only her cleavage to show for it. That restriction actually makes the scene even hotter, since it makes extremely clear who is in charge. This is a favor granted and one should be grateful. Of course, her hands and mouth are more than enough to reduce both men to sticky messes. As an office lady, Asami-chan provides a full experience that flows quite naturally and easily draws the viewer into feeling he is there. As the tease, she masturbates to titillate, and then only uses her hands and mouth on one fellow and that is more than enough. As a girlfriend, she screws the man to the point where his token facial does not even need a wank for his orgasm to fall on her face. As a health provider, everything except penetration goes, and it’s obvious that it is more than enough as the man blows his load into her hands, just as his predecessor in the previous scene did. As a cheerleader, you get the full service package.

I’ve mentioned it before, but her performer’s instinct renders each role believable and complete immerses you in the flow.

Overall

Yuma Asami’s instinct for a good performance, her obvious enthusiasm and genuine cheerfulness, combine in this movie into knockout blow. She’s the girl next door, the angel in appearance and the devil’s daughter in bed. This movie takes you through a variety of roles, each one quite believable, with a certain note of authenticity behind it. Charm, cheer, seduction, those are the elements she draws upon as a JAV actress and the combination is intoxicating. She may have retired, but her past films are a treasure hoard for anyone who pretends to be a serious fan of JAV.

Introduction

The maid costume fetish is by no means unique to Japan, but they take it to another level, and not just in porn.  It's a common trope in more mainstream areas of their popular culture, from film, to anime, to the maid cafes that proliferate the country.  For our purposes though, we'll obviously focus on the porn.  The maid genre is a reliable and common one in JAV, and it's such in demand that it goes beyond general cosplay films and into its own specific genre.  With cosplay, sometimes the actress will play the role of her costume, but other times she simply gets banged wearing a costume with little else going on.  Don't get me wrong, that can still be pretty hot.  But with maid fetish films, the costume is only part of it.  The actress is also required to take on the role of the maid, providing whatever services her master deems necessary.  With that in mind, I'd thought I'd take a look at a recent entry from busty girl-focused Oppai, one of my favorite labels.

 

The Actress

Julia is the actress that really got me to develop JAV fandom.  Prior to discovering her, I'd seen a video here and there, but never really got into Japanese adult film.  Pretty much every JAV fan has the one they started with. And she's mine.  While there have been plenty of hotties I've gotten into after her, none have mounted a serious challenge to dethroning Julia as my favorite. 

Debuting in 2010, this former nurse has a dynamite body, a unique face, and probably my all time favorite set of big natural tits on a small frame.  As of 2016, she's one of the titans of the industry and her work rate has been astounding as she regularly drops several films a month. 

I'll be completely honest here: I struggle to be objective when it comes to Julia.  She utterly dominates my collection, I've got easily 60+ films of hers and growing.  What I really like about her is that she keeps exploring different themes, so she stays fresh.  Nurse, hooker, cosplay, teacher, wife, sister, fitness instructor, ninja... she's done it all.  Some have criticized her performances as a bit wooden, coasting on her body, and perhaps that's fair, especially in some of her older work.  She's not a particularly aggressive or raunchy type performer.  But she's a certified pro with her bedroom skills and it's hard for me to conceive of getting tired of her.

If I had to critique her, I'd say that a drawback to her exploring many genres means that not all of her films appeal to me.  There are definitely fetishes and genres she's worked in that I have simply no interest in.  I also find her ouput to come in streaks: she'll go through a period where I am loving every film she comes out with, but then there will be a few in a row that I have no interest in.  But that's OK, because rather than being consistent but safe, she'll cater to some fringe interests as well.  Sometimes those fringe interests happen to be my fringe interests, and sometimes not.

While I might not be objective on the actress and how hot I think she is, I am objective on her films.  I know what I demand from a good Julia film and I've tons of examples in my library, which equally means I know what a bad Julia film looks like.  So not to worry, you will get a reliable opinion from me on her movies.

The Performance

Julia looks fantastically sexy in her maid outfit, which immediately caught my attention.  She dives right into the role of maid/sexual servant, offering up a great combination of being demure while also showing an eagerness to please.  She does an excellent job of using her tits in many scenes, whether it's propping them up on a serving plate, or rubbing cream all over them.  In fact, I would say this film is an excellent showcase of her tits, despite not being specifically tit or tittyfucking focused in theme.  She also displays a great attitude and charisma, particularly during the POV segments when she is talking right to the camera.  She looks like she's really enjoying playing with her master, and with her own tits in just about every scene.  I also really liked the one sex scene in the hallway where she convulses with pleasure and passion.  I definitely think she's come a long way with her performances and her emoting, and it's not really fair to peg her as "wooden" anymore, not that I thought she was particularly bad when she started.  Another thing I like about Julia, which is on display in this film, is that she regulates the pitch of her voice when moaning with pleasure in a way I enjoy.  She avoids being a ridiculous screamer or having too high of a pitch in this film, which is saying a lot for a JAV idol.  From start to finish, this is an all-around great performance, definitely in the upper tier of Julia films.

Story/Theme/Setting

I've heard some criticism of Oppai that they have hot busty girls but having boring films, without showcasing good performances or interesting films.  Honestly, that's just complete horseshit.  While there will always be poor films for any label or actress from time to time, Oppai are one of the most consistent labels and anyone who loves busty Japanese girls simply cannot be without a good selection of Oppai films in their library.  Oppai take their busts very seriously, and I can tell in this film just how much they care.  In many cosplay films, it is common that the costume will conceal the idols' breasts, which is totally fine, if we are talking a full body costume.  However, some of them will leave it on for the entirety of the scene, leaving the idol's bust covered up.  This to me is just plain awful.  Particularly in the case of Julia, if I am not getting my fill of her glorious tits, then what is the point of watching?  This leads me to my point.  The filmmakers clearly showed some skill in picking the maid costume for this film.  At the beginning of a couple of scenes, Julia is fully dressed in maid regalia, but that quickly stops, and she then alternates between maid-themed lingerie and a fuller maid costume that has openings for her tits to be completely exposed.  This way, I get to have both Julia's tits as well as the maid cosplay element.  This alone is a huge win for me.

Beyond the excellent costume, the execution of the theme is well done.  At the beginning of the scenes, we see Julia performing various maid tasks such as cleaning, laundry and serving food or drink.  The filmmakers then do a great job of bringing even more creativity into it.  There's a nice sequence where Julia serves tea, and then for the cream, she rubs it all over her tits and serves those up to her master.  In another part, she tucks her master into bed with an oiled-up titty fuck.  I also have to give them points for staging: instead of the usual modern Japanese house/apartment/hotel, they set the scenes in what looks to more European-style interiors, with woodwork, chandeliers and the like.  All in all, the maid theme is executed perfectly.

Sexual Content

The film opens with the aforementioned creamy tits scene.  From the moment she appears, serving her tits up on a platter, through to the creamy tit licking and rubbing, I found this to be a highly erotic scene.  Usually I find scenes lacking some form of penetration or cumshot to be pretty boring, but this scene is amazing, despite the fact that the guy never pulls his dick out to use on her in any way.  It's a creative way to open the film that doesn't sacrifice any of the sexual payoff.  The next scene in the film features excellent fucking, titty fucking and blowjob action, but what I particularly like about it (and the entire film for that matter) is the opportunity to see Julia prancing around in her hot maid outfit.  The camera angles are really nice, offering some stellar views as she prances around and then gets manhandled by her master.  Since this part takes place on a couch, the sex predominantly features cowgirl and doggystyle, by far my favorite two positions for Julia, in that order.  It concludes with an excellent titty fuck and cumshot. 

Next, we have the scene where she tucks her master in with an oily tittyfuck.  This is a great scene and another reason why I like this film is that the smaller, shorter scenes that bridge the longer, penetrative sex scenes are still both creative and sexy.  For many films, these scenes are often filler and not very satisfying in sexual content, so they're skippable.  But in this film I really enjoyed them.  The next scene takes place in a hallway and is also quite hot, but I really want to talk about the final scene, where Julia takes on two masters at once.  Usually, I am not a fan of threesomes in JAV with two guys.  But something about this one really works for me, partially I think due to the maid theme.  It also has a fantastic finish, as Julia receives both a creampie and a facial.  In general, I have to say that the sex in this film was really great and a nice variety.  There was also not a single scene that I felt the need to fast forward through, which is saying a lot, because even many great JAV films there can be one "meh" scene.

Overall

As we'll see in the future, neither Julia's presence nor her physical perfection guarantees an adequate film, but in this case, it requires SAT words to adequately describe just how fantastic an experience this feature is from start to finish. Julia's looks surpass the minimum for a sexy maid while her acting drives her into the stratosphere as she expertly fulfills the combination of deference and smoldering desire that many men fantasize about when it comes to this genre. Her sensuality coupled with the sexual skill she displays throughout turns this film into a must-have for anyone who claims to be a fan of Julia, maids, or big tits.

Introduction

Bursting (or perhaps busting) onto the scene at the end of 2014, Matsuoka Senna has slowly built up what is looking to be a promising career.  All but exclusively signed to the Soft On Demand Star label, she has been churning out some solid videos across various genres, and seems to fulfill that niche of "girl next door with big natural tits" that Aimi Yoshikawa occupied until she signed for other labels.  Senna-chan has slowly but surely worked her way into becoming one of my favorites.  In fact, the only thing holding her back from potentially being my top actress is simply that she hasn't put out enough films yet.  Since her debut, she's generally averaged about 1 film a month, although there has been a bit of an uptick lately.  Read on to find out how she captivated me in her debut production.

The Actress

What can I say, I am a sucker for those innocent looks accompanied by a set of big juicy tits.  But one of the pitfalls of the more "innocent" looking actresses is that they tend to take the coquettish aspect too far, to the point where they are just too passive for my tastes.  Some guys, and certainly many guys in Japan, are into that.  But I like a bit more of a balance, and Senna-chan does just that.  She conveys a certain innocence, and yet also desire, and when she gets down do business, she can suck a dick like a pro.  When you consider the total package of her face, frame and of course those lovely funbags, overall, she is one of the better-looking actresses.

The Performance

One of the interesting things about JAV is the concept of a debut film.  I find the slow burn to be appealing, rather than just getting down to business.  Some might find debut films a little dull compared to other videos, and that would be completely true.  But debut films exist in their own category, so in order to judge a debut performance effectively, we need to judge it against other debut performances, rather than the more raunchy and degrading work that comes later in a career.  What makes a great debut film in my opinion are two elements: the buildup and the payoff.  Senna-chan does a great job with the innocence in the early part of the film, as we work our way through some interviews and a slow and seductive strip sequence.  The early sexual content is also very gradual, but builds up quickly, and her skills are on full display in the majority of the film.  Her acting and emoting are both solid, and on the technical side of things, she eagerly gives head and receives a robust fucking throughout the film.

Story/Theme/Setting

It can be a severe disappointment when a debut production spends far too much time on the introductory parts and far too little time on the sexual content, with little payoff (or in worst cases, perhaps only one full on sex scene at the end).  Luckily, this film strikes the balance well.  The three hour running time really helps here, as we don't need to rush through the introduction, yet at the same time there was lots of room for sex before it all faded to black.  Not much in the way of story or outlandish themes, but again, in the context of a debut film, this one gets it right.

Sexual Content

In terms of debut films, the sexual content here is ample.  After the initial parts and the strip down, the first scene has the actor explore Senna-chan's body before engaging in a bit of fingering and titty fucking, which leads into vigorous intercourse.  The fact that the first sex scene is this solid gets high marks from this reviewer.  We then break things up a bit with a handjob/blowjob scene followed by two more sex scenes which also include some oral action.  This may not sound like a lot of sex scenes, but they are long and get the job done right up until the final money shot.  The only thing that may disappoint is that the majority of the fucking is either missionary or girl on top, there's only a small helping of doggy style, and other positions don't make any appearance.

Overall

The bottom line is that this is a very well put together debut film from an amazing and sexy performer.  I can't give it a perfect rating, but a lot of that is down to the inherent drawbacks of the debut genre.  I also have to deduct a little for the fact that the sexy red bikini on the cover makes an appearance for literally about 3 seconds and only during the end credits.  It takes some truly rare and out of this world work for a debut film to get top marks and compare up against other genres.  Still, this is nothing less than a highly recommended film, and really a must own for Senna-chan fans and anyone who is particularly smitten by girls of her type.

Why JAV is Better than Western Porn

I've seen my fair share of Western porn.  Hell, I grew up with it.  There have been and are now many fine performers and filmmakers in the industry.  But, as a whole, the American adult industry pales in comparison with JAV.  The Japanese simply do it better, and most JAV fans would agree with this point. Yet, why is this? I set out the break down some of the leading reasons behind this.

1.  Better (and More) Asian Women

Ok, so let's cut to the chase: if you like JAV, you are into Asian women.  And probably not just a little, but a lot.  Like a real lot.  Sure, many JAV fans also like other varieties of women, but Asian women have a substantial presence.  There are certainly Asian women in American porn (generally American-born for the most part), but there aren't many.  In fact, at any one time there are only a handful of what I'd call top Asian performers active in the industry.  JAV, by its very nature of being Japanese, offers many more Asian performers, typically way hotter than the ones in the West.  There's also a ton more variety, with every conceivable body type and taste being represented in mass quantities. In contrast, Western porn is a desert for Asian lovers.

2.  Creativity

This one is probably the biggest reason.  The JAV industry is dominated by the feature length film.  The 2+ hour running time that is more or less an industry standard allows for full and deep exploration of many themes.  Some themes focus on specific sex acts, while others may focus on certain locations, occupations, costumes, or storylines.  But the great thing about JAV is that the story-driven nature of most films does not in any way impact the amount of sexual content for the most part.  JAV strikes a great balance in this aspect.  For me, story, setup, and theme are critical aspects of the experience and in the West this has become something of a lost art.  There are a few Western companies that do a great job on themes and setup, but they don't take it to the level that JAV does.  JAV simply has more creative freedom.

3. Smorgasbord Approach

One of the pitfalls of Western porn is how many actresses will get to a certain level of popularity and then they will try out new levels of hardcore acts, whether it be anal, gangbang, group sex, etc.  But once they cross that threshold, many of them stay there.  Disappointing sets in for those fans disinterested in some of those themes; it's hard to find new work from those actresses that are appealing.  For example, if a performer really starts getting into gangbangs, and you aren't into that, then you are out of luck if the majority of her content becomes gangbangs.  But with JAV, actresses explore many themes that you may or may not like, but they will always keep a good variety going.  They won't just abandon the classic themes that got them started like soapland, wife, or office lady.  This is great because there usually ends up being something for everyone.  

4.  Sensuality and Eroticism

This last point is a bit subjective, but from my point of view I find JAV to be more sensual, more erotic.  In Western porn, you get some setup story (sometimes even not that), and then typically it's right into foreplay and then pounding away, interjected with bouts of oral.  Sometimes that can be great, as some Western porn can be really good at the "pounding away" part.  But something is also lost... a lack of seductiveness, or conversely, a lack of innocence in the performance of the actresses.  Maybe to put it more simply, there's more actual acting in JAV.  They are simply way better when it comes to facial expressions and mannerisms.  Whether it's an actress playing the role of your wife in POV, or an actress trying to steal away her sister's man, JAV does a remarkable job displaying real eroticism.
